Cut the Salt: Pathways to Reducing Salt Use in Water Control
Ontario is leading the world in its use of salt in winter control. But not in a good way - it's causing major impacts to our lakes, rivers and streams which threaten our drinking water and recreation activities. This session will combine municipal perspectives with the work of the Ontario Salt Pollution Coalition to get at the heart of how we can turn the curve on this issue and keep our water fresh.
Dani Lindamood is the Campaigns & Communications Director of Water Watchers. Dani is a community activator, campaigner, and creative based in the Great Lakes basin. With a Masters exploring water sustainability and policy, as well as over a decade of academic, non-profit, and creative experience researching and protecting water, Dani is honoured that water is the connective thread of her career. Dani is also the lead organizer for the Ontario Salt Pollution Coalition, a collaborative campaign bringing together diverse voices from across Ontario for better provincial winter maintenance policies and pathways to address the salt pollution of Ontario waters.
Julie is a city councillor in Waterloo, Ontario and the National Director of Our Living Waters, a Canada-wide network that unites Canadian water leaders towards “all waters in good health by 2030.” Previously, she led Partners for Action, a research initiative at the University of Waterloo that focuses on flood risk and resilience, and for a decade prior, she ran the Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI), a global summit series that tackled decarbonization and energy access, sustainable development, and education for the 21st Century. Her early career included 10 years in communications and public affairs work for clients at the forefront of sector disruption.
